## What to avoid, and when to patch test

- **Several new actives at once.** Using more than one anti-ageing product within a few days or weeks can irritate the skin, the American Academy of Dermatology warns. Focus on one concern, such as wrinkles or dark spots.
- **Exaggerated promises.** Anti-ageing products deliver modest results, and promises such as looking ten years younger overnight are too good to be true, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
- **Retinoids in pregnancy.** The NHS advises against topical retinoids in pregnancy, and brands including Medik8 and Geek & Gorgeous direct against vitamin A use while pregnant.
- **Skipping the patch test.** Try a new active on the underside of the arm twice a day for seven to ten days first, as the American Academy of Dermatology suggests.
