## What helps large pores and uneven texture?

Pores look larger when they are clogged, when skin is oily and when sun damage reduces firmness, the American Academy of Dermatology explains. It suggests non-comedogenic products, cleansing twice a day with warm water, salicylic acid or retinol, gentle exfoliation and daily sunscreen. Below are products whose brands target the look of pores or texture.

## What to look for

- **Non-comedogenic products.** When pores clog, they expand and look more noticeable, so the American Academy of Dermatology suggests only non-comedogenic skincare and make-up.
- **Salicylic and glycolic acids.** Studies show salicylic acid can unclog pores, and exfoliating may make pores less noticeable, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. [AHA and BHA acids, explained](https://thecastindex.com/beauty/ingredients/exfoliating-acids)
- **Retinol.** If skin is oily or less firm than it was, a product with retinol or retinyl palmitate may help, the American Academy of Dermatology says. [Retinol and retinal, explained](https://thecastindex.com/beauty/ingredients/retinoids)
- **Niacinamide.** The Ordinary says its niacinamide serum helps reduce the appearance of pores. Read what the evidence supports first. [Niacinamide, explained](https://thecastindex.com/beauty/ingredients/niacinamide)
- **Daily sunscreen.** Sun damage reduces firmness, which makes pores more noticeable, the American Academy of Dermatology explains. [Sunscreen filters, explained](https://thecastindex.com/beauty/ingredients/sunscreen-filters)

## What to avoid, and when to patch test

- **Hot water and scrubbing.** Hot water and scrubbing can irritate skin and make pores look larger; the American Academy of Dermatology suggests warm water and a gentle wash.
- **Over-exfoliating.** Over-exfoliating can leave skin red and irritated, and exfoliating while using retinol may worsen dryness, the American Academy of Dermatology warns. Never exfoliate sunburned skin.
- **Expecting make-up to change pores.** Blurring primers, powders and foundations change how pores look while you wear them, not the pores themselves.
