The single most confusing thing about fashion is that the clothes you see on the runway aren’t for the season you’re in — they’re for the season ahead. Here’s how the calendar actually works.

## Why do fashion shows happen months before the season?

So retailers can see collections, place wholesale orders, and market them in time — and so manufacturers can produce them. Ready-to-wear shows typically run about six months before the clothes reach stores. That is why a coat walks in February for the following autumn, and a swimsuit in September for next spring.

When you read “AW26” or “SS27,” it refers to the season the collection is for, not when it was shown. The Cast Index labels events with both the human date range and the season code so those two clocks cannot be confused.

Some brands now stage “see now, buy now” or destination shows. Those are exceptions. The default wholesale calendar is still ahead of retail, which is why a recap written in March is not a shopping list for March.

## What do SS and AW mean?

SS is Spring/Summer and AW is Autumn/Winter (also written FW, Fall/Winter). The letters name the season the collection is designed for. Menswear, haute couture, resort and pre-fall are separate calendars that sit around those two main ready-to-wear blocks.

Menswear typically shows in January and June. Haute couture — made-to-measure, largely in Paris — shows in January and July. Resort (cruise) and pre-fall collections sit between the main seasons and quietly account for a large share of luxury sales even though they get less pavement photography.

## What is the order within a season?

Each ready-to-wear season the Big Four run New York, then London, then Milan, then Paris, across about four weeks. Emerging and regional weeks slot around them through the year. That order is a convention of the international press-and-buyer circuit, not a ranking of quality.

A model who “does the four cities” in one season is logging a specific kind of stamina and demand. A model who dominates one national week may still belong on Rising rather than the Global 50 until cross-market evidence exists. The methodology spells out that distinction; geography never subtracts points.

## How should you read a 2026 date sheet?

Start from the organiser, not a screenshot. CFDA, BFC, CNMI and FHCM publish the official sheets. Then check the Cast Index event page for the edition’s dates, confirmed houses, and whether the week is upcoming, live or complete. Do not treat a blog’s “NYFW is always this Monday” as a booking.

For AW26, the desk’s sourced sheets included New York 11–16 February 2026, London 19–23 February, Milan 24 February–2 March, and Paris 2–10 March, with couture on its own January and July calendars. Always re-check the live event page: organisers amend.
