New York Fashion Week opens the international season each February and September. It’s the most commercial of the Big Four — the home of American sportswear and ready-to-wear — and it’s also the oldest: the very first coordinated fashion week was held here in 1943.

## When is New York Fashion Week?

New York shows first each ready-to-wear season — September for the following Spring/Summer, February for the following Autumn/Winter — before London, Milan and Paris. Exact dates move. For AW26 the CFDA sheet ran 11–16 February 2026 across more than 60 shows and presentations. Always re-check the live event page.

The week is no longer a single tent city. After Bryant Park (1993) and Lincoln Center (2010), the primary venue shifted to Spring Studios in Lower Manhattan in 2015, with shows staged across the city.

## Who created New York Fashion Week, and who runs it now?

Publicist Eleanor Lambert created Press Week in 1943 for the New York Dress Institute, to redirect coverage toward American designers when wartime travel cut off Paris. In 1993 the CFDA consolidated scattered shows as “7th on Sixth” in Bryant Park. Commercial production later passed through IMG. The CFDA still publishes the official calendar.

Lambert’s brief was explicit: American design had been ignored in favour of French collections. The strategy worked — Vogue and peers began featuring American names in the seasons that followed.

In December 2025 the CFDA announced that official NYFW events would prohibit animal fur from September 2026, aligning New York with London’s 2018 fur-free policy. That is a calendar rule, not a street-style rumour.

## What is New York Fashion Week known for?

A commercial, sportswear-led ready-to-wear engine rather than couture theatre. It is where American houses meet wholesale reality first each season. It is not the most experimental Big Four stop (that is London) and it is not couture (that is Paris in January and July).

If you are tracking faces, NYFW is often where a season’s American commercial cast is visible first. If you are tracking finishes, wait until the month’s other cities have shown before declaring a “season look” from New York alone.

## Who should skip New York Fashion Week coverage?
