# Wastra 101: Batik, Tenun, Songket and Ulos Explained

> Learn how batik, tenun, songket and ulos are made, how to tell hand-drawn batik from stamped and printed cloth, and how to care for and credit wastra.

- Canonical: https://thecastindex.com/journal/indonesian-wastra-batik-tenun-songket-ulos-guide
- Question: The practical takeaway
- Direct answer: Wastra is the Indonesian term for traditional cloth. Batik is patterned with wax resist on finished fabric; tenun, songket and ulos are woven, with the pattern built into the cloth. Check both sides of a batik, ask how it was made, follow gentle care advice and credit the maker or region you can confirm.

## Start with one useful distinction

Wastra is the word Indonesians use for traditional cloth, borrowed from the Sanskrit for fabric, and it covers a vast range of regional techniques. A simple way into the subject is to ask where the pattern comes from. In woven cloth, the design is formed while the textile is made; in surface techniques such as batik, it is added to a finished cloth. That single question shapes what you look for and what you ask.

Fortune Indonesia’s 2022 overview, drawing on an Indonesian fashion dictionary, describes these as structural designs (reka rakit), such as woven cloth, and surface designs (reka latar), such as batik, jumputan and embroidery. The categories are a reading aid rather than a hierarchy. Both include highly skilled work, and both now appear in contemporary fashion as well as in traditional dress.

## Batik: wax, dye and patience

UNESCO inscribed Indonesian Batik on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. It describes craftspeople drawing dots and lines of hot wax on cotton or silk; the wax resists the dye, and dyeing and wax removal are repeated for each colour. Indonesia marks National Batik Day each year on 2 October, the anniversary of the inscription.

Two techniques matter to a buyer. Batik tulis is drawn by hand with a canting, a small pen-like tool that holds molten wax, and allows very fine detail. Batik cap applies the wax with a stamp, in modern Java usually made of copper strips and wire, which makes larger quantities more efficient at the expense of some detail. Makers also combine the two. Cloth printed with batik motifs, without wax resist, is a different product.

## Tell batik tulis, cap and printed cloth apart

Start by turning the cloth over. Speaking to ANTARA in 2015, Doddy Soepardi of Yayasan Batik Indonesia said that a printed textile with a batik motif usually has a white reverse, whereas genuine batik shows the motif on both sides. A 2015 ANTARA Jogja report, quoting the Ministry of Industry’s Centre for Crafts and Batik (BBKB) and the batik association Sekar Jagad, added that a motif that does not show through may indicate printed cloth, printed fabric tends to feel stiff, batik tulis drapes easily and a batikmark label is intended to guarantee quality and authenticity.

Treat these as indicators, not proof, and use them together rather than relying on one. A stamp repeats the same block, so look at how a motif recurs across the cloth; a canting allows finer, individually drawn lines. The most reliable route is to buy from a maker or seller who will state the technique in writing, and to keep that description with your receipt.

**Quick checks for batik and batik-motif cloth**

| What you see | What it may suggest | What to ask |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The motif is clearly visible on both sides | Consistent with wax-resist batik, tulis or cap | Which technique was used, and were tulis and cap combined? |
| A white or very pale reverse | Often a printed textile with a batik motif | Is this printed cloth, and how should it be described? |
| Very fine, individually drawn lines | Consistent with hand drawing using a canting | Who drew it, and where was it made? |
| A block of pattern repeating exactly | Could indicate a stamp (cap) or a print | Was the wax applied by stamp, by hand or both? Check the reverse too. |
| A batikmark label | A quality and authenticity mark referred to by BBKB | Which body issued the label for this piece? |

## Woven wastra: tenun, songket and ulos

Tenun is woven cloth, and many regional traditions use ikat, a technique in which yarns are tied and dyed before weaving so that the pattern is built into the threads and appears on both faces. Warp ikat, weft ikat and the more demanding double ikat each behave differently; the double-ikat geringsing is woven only in Tenganan, a Bali Aga village in eastern Bali, where it has high spiritual significance.

Songket is a brocade-like tenun in which gold or silver threads are inserted as a supplementary weft. It is associated with Palembang, Minangkabau communities in West Sumatra, Bali and Lombok, and is often worn for weddings and ceremonies. Ulos is the traditionally hand-woven cloth of the Batak people of North Sumatra, usually draped over the shoulders and given at important family occasions. For all three, ask the region, the maker and the fibre before you style or alter a piece.

## Wastra on the runway, and at home

Wastra is a living part of Indonesian fashion. BTN Indonesia Fashion Week 2026, the fourteenth edition of the week led by the designers’ association APPMI, ran from 29 July to 2 August at the Jakarta International Convention Center under the theme Ulos Simetria, presenting ulos in contemporary silhouettes with North Sumatra as theme partner. This October’s Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week also featured Fomalhaut Zamel, a label working with West Sumatran tenun.

At home, care matters as much as provenance. Speaking to ANTARA in 2014, the head of collections and preservation at Museum Tekstil Jakarta advised avoiding bleaching soaps and washing machines, using lerak (soapnut) or a lerak-based detergent, soaking briefly and kneading gently, drying in shade rather than direct sun, ironing sparingly without high heat and avoiding sharp folds in storage. Follow a maker’s own instructions first, especially for metallic-thread or very old cloth.

- Ask whether the pattern is woven in or applied to the surface.
- For batik, ask whether it is tulis, cap or a combination, and look at both sides.
- Record the maker, region, fibre and dimensions with your receipt.
- Wash only when needed, by hand, with lerak or a gentle batik detergent, and dry in shade.
- Store in a cool, dry place, avoid sharp folds and air the cloth from time to time.
- Credit the maker and region you can confirm when you post or publish the look.

## FAQ

### Is printed batik-motif fabric real batik?

Printed cloth uses batik motifs but not the wax-resist process that defines batik. It can be attractive and affordable; describe it accurately as a printed textile.

### How can I tell batik tulis from batik cap?

Batik tulis is drawn with a canting and allows very fine, individually drawn detail; batik cap applies the wax with a stamp. Many pieces combine both, so ask the maker which technique was used.

### When was Indonesian batik recognised by UNESCO?

Indonesian Batik was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, and Indonesia marks National Batik Day on 2 October.
