How to become a runway model (honestly)

There’s a lot of bad, expensive advice online about “becoming a model.” This is the honest version — how the industry really scouts and signs new faces, written for the newcomers The Cast Index’s Rising board exists to champion.

What casting actually looks for

On the runway, agencies and casting directors look for a combination of proportions, a distinctive look, a strong and natural walk, professionalism, and a point of difference. Requirements vary enormously by market and category, and the industry is far more open on age, size, and background than the clichés suggest — but reliability and how you carry yourself matter as much as measurements.

You don’t need professional photos to start. Agencies prefer simple, un-retouched “digitals”: a few clear photos in plain clothing against a blank wall — front, side, and full-length — plus your height and basic measurements.

How to find a real agency

The legitimate route is a reputable modelling agency. Most run “open calls” (walk-in or online submission windows) — check the agency’s official website for how they accept new faces, and submit your digitals directly. Research the agencies that represent models you admire; The Cast Index lists agencies alongside the models on their rosters.

Emerging markets are one of the strongest routes in right now. Weeks like Lagos, Jakarta, São Paulo, Mumbai, Dakar, and Tbilisi are producing faces that go on to the Big Four — which is exactly why our Rising board tracks them.

How to avoid the scams

The single most important rule: a reputable agency never asks you to pay to be signed. Agencies make money by taking a commission when you work — not by charging you upfront for “courses,” mandatory photoshoots, or registration fees. Be very cautious of any “agency” or “scout” that requires payment to join, guarantees work, or pressures you to sign on the spot.

Never send money or sensitive personal or financial details to an unverified contact, and if you’re under 18, involve a parent or guardian in every step.

FAQ

Common questions

How do you become a runway model?
The legitimate route is to submit simple, natural “digitals” (clear photos in plain clothing, plus your height and measurements) to a reputable modelling agency, usually via its open call or official submission page. If they’re interested, they’ll invite you to meet.
Do modelling agencies charge to sign you?
No. A reputable agency never charges you to be signed — they earn a commission when you work. Being asked to pay upfront for courses, photoshoots, or registration is a major red flag for a scam.
Do you need professional photos to start modelling?
No. Agencies prefer simple, un-retouched “digitals” — front, side, and full-length photos in plain clothing against a blank wall — over professional or heavily edited images.
