Early life
Nyakim Gatwech was born on 27 January 1993; her parents fled Maiwut, South Sudan, during the Second Sudanese Civil War, settling first in a refugee camp in Gambela, Ethiopia, and later in Kenya. The family moved to the United States when she was 14, first to Buffalo, New York, and then to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she attended St. Cloud Tech High School before pursuing nursing and education studies at Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
03 / Career record
Entering modelling and public advocacy, 2017
Gatwech began modelling informally after taking part in an "Africa Night" fashion show at St. Cloud State University during her senior year of high school, initially negotiating her own early bookings rather than signing with a costly New York agency. In March 2017 a "Different Melanin" photo shoot showcasing varied skin tones became an early viral moment, and she was later featured in Teen Vogue following a widely reported incident involving a discriminatory comment about her skin tone. That year she also appeared in promotional posters for the film Jigsaw and was an honorary guest at the South Sudan ACE Awards in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Recent record
Gatwech was named a member of L’Oréal Paris’s ambassador roster in 2019, and has publicly discussed declining a reported offer to bleach her skin, a story that became central to her advocacy work and earned her the nickname "Queen of Dark." Her brand work has included Calvin Klein, Nike and Aldo.
