Haute couture vs Ready-to-wear

The short answer

Haute couture is a legally protected French designation for original, made-to-measure clothes sewn by hand in a house’s French workshops and shown in Paris each January and July. Ready-to-wear, or prêt-à-porter, is made in standard sizes and larger quantities, shown in February–March and September–October, and sold far more widely.

What is the difference between haute couture and ready-to-wear?

Haute couture is not a general word for expensive clothes. The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) says it became a legally registered designation of origin on 23 January 1945, and only houses approved each year by a commission under the aegis of the French Ministry for Industry may use it. Its pieces are customised to the client’s measurements and made largely by hand in the house’s workshops. Our answer what is haute couture? goes further.

Ready-to-wear, or prêt-à-porter, is clothing sold finished in standardised sizes. AFP describes it as industrial fashion made in larger quantities. Couture houses also sell ready-to-wear, and those lines usually bring in more profit because of the volume.

What rules does a haute couture house have to meet?

The FHCM says accredited houses must meet criteria on craftsmanship, personalisation, collection schedules and the know-how of their ateliers, without publishing the full list. Speaking to AFP in January 2026, FHCM executive president Pascal Morand set them out: original designs made to measure and by hand, workshops in France with separate tailleur (tailoring) and flou (dressmaking) ateliers, at least 20 staff, and shows in Paris each January and July of at least 25 day and evening looks.

AFP counted 13 accredited houses, among them Dior, Chanel, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Maison Margiela and Schiaparelli, plus seven correspondent members based outside Paris, such as Armani, Valentino and Elie Saab. The accreditation lasts one year. For the short definition, see haute couture in our glossary.

When are the haute couture and ready-to-wear shows?

Couture has its own calendar in Paris, in January and July. The FHCM has set 25–28 January 2027 for spring/summer 2027 and 5–8 July 2027 for autumn/winter 2027–28.

Paris ready-to-wear runs in February–March and September–October: womenswear is 1–9 March 2027 and 27 September–5 October 2027, with menswear on 19–24 January and 22–27 June 2027. Milan’s ready-to-wear weeks sit just before Paris. See ready-to-wear in our glossary.

Choose Ready-to-wear if

Ready-to-wear is the designer clothing most people can actually buy: standard sizes, sold in shops, often from the same houses that make couture.

Quick answers

Related questions

Is Paris Fashion Week haute couture?

Not the main week. Paris Fashion Week in March and around October shows ready-to-wear. Haute Couture Week is a separate FHCM calendar each January and July; in 2027 it runs 25–28 January and 5–8 July.

Can anyone call their clothes haute couture?

Not in France. The designation has been legally protected since 1945, and only houses approved each year by a commission under the Ministry for Industry may use it. Elsewhere the phrase is often used loosely for luxury fashion.

Who buys haute couture?

A small private clientele. AFP reported in January 2026 that couture clients buy pieces for red carpets, galas and major events, with each piece made to the client’s own measurements.

Does Milan show haute couture?

No official couture week. Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana’s Milan calendars are for women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, and couture is shown in Paris. See Paris vs Milan Fashion Week.
