How much do models make?

In brief

The only official figure we found is American. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for models at $23.30 an hour, or $48,470 a year, for May 2025, across 3,780 employed models. It leaves out the self-employed, which many models are, and agencies take commission from what models earn.

Key points

What do official statistics say models earn?

The clearest official number comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics ↗. Its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for Models (occupation 41-9012) estimate 3,780 employed models in May 2025, with a median wage of $23.30 an hour, or $48,470 a year. The mean is higher, at $35.00 an hour ($72,800 a year), so the median is the better guide to a typical wage.

The spread is wide: the bottom tenth earned $16.44 an hour or less, and the top tenth $63.21 or more. The survey covers wage and salary workers ↗ and does not include the self-employed, so freelance models are not in these numbers.

Is there an official figure for model pay in the UK?

We could not find an official UK pay statistic for models alone, so treat any single “average UK model salary” online with caution. What UK sources do set out is how the money moves. The British Fashion Model Agents Association ↗ tells new models that they will be self-employed and will have to look after their own finances.

Wherever you work, the numbers that apply to you are the ones in your agency contract and on your own statements. Our where-to-apply guide lists agencies country by country, with the fee rules each market publishes.

How do models get paid by their agency?

The agency finds and negotiates the work, the client pays the agency, and the agency passes the fee on after taking its commission. The rate is set in your contract, and the BFMA says it can vary from one agent to the next. In the UK, GOV.UK guidance ↗ says agencies cannot charge fashion and photographic models any upfront fee for finding work, and cannot charge or deduct anything until the model has agreed to their terms.

Under regulation 25 ↗ of the UK’s 2003 Conduct Regulations, money an agency receives for you is held on trust in a client account and must be paid on within ten days unless you ask it to hold it longer. Each payment comes with a statement of who paid, for which work and what was deducted, and a fee can be deducted only if your contract allows it. Clients can be slow to pay the agency in the first place: the BFMA says it can take upwards of 60 days.

Germany sets a legal ceiling. When a placement agent places a photo model or mannequin in employment, the fee agreed with the model may not exceed 14% of pay including VAT, or 18% for jobs of up to seven days, under the Vermittler-Vergütungsverordnung ↗.

Why are famous models’ earnings a poor guide?

Press lists of the highest-paid models describe a few people at the very top of the profession. They tell you nothing about what a working model takes home. The official data point the other way: half of employed US models earned $23.30 an hour or less in May 2025.

Watch the costs as well as the fees. The BFMA says a supportive agency may advance some expenses, such as rent or travel, and reclaim them over time from what you earn, so an advance is money you pay back. Our guide to managing money as a model covers tax, advances and the traps to avoid.
