Lakmé Fashion Week was inaugurated in 2000 as a joint venture between the sports and entertainment company IMG Reliance and the Indian cosmetics brand Lakmé, which serves as title sponsor. The event now runs under the branding "Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI," reflecting its ongoing partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India, the country’s primary designer trade body.

The week operates on a bi-annual schedule split across two Indian cities: a Summer-Resort show staged in March in Mumbai, and a Winter-Festive show staged in October in Delhi — a structure that lets the event showcase both India’s lighter seasonal fabrics and its heavier festive and bridal-wear traditions within the same calendar year.

Lakmé Fashion Week has been credited with launching the careers of major Indian designers, most notably Sabyasachi Mukherjee, alongside established names including Manish Malhotra, Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani and Ritu Beri, who have shown collections there. Its guest list has regularly included Bollywood stars such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Deepika Padukone, and the event has drawn international participation from figures including Naomi Campbell as well as global luxury houses Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana.

Now in its 26th edition, staged in partnership with FDCI, the Spring/Summer 2026 Summer-Resort show ran 19–22 March 2026 at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre — continuing the event’s long-standing position as India’s longest-running fashion week.
