02 / History
The 1973 gala at Versailles
The Palace of Versailles dates its celebrated fashion gala to 28 November 1973. Held at the Royal Opera to support restoration of the palace, the event brought French and American designers together and became known as the Battle of Versailles.
The palace’s account credits Gérald Van der Kemp and Baroness Marie-Hélène de Rothschild with organising the fundraising reception. Its history should not be confused with the dates of the regular fashion-week schedule.

Building a ready-to-wear calendar
In the years after 1973, Paris formalized a recurring ready-to-wear schedule sitting alongside its older couture calendar. Oversight ultimately consolidated under the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, the umbrella body descended from the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne (1868), which today sets official dates for all three Paris calendars — couture, ready-to-wear and menswear — and enforces membership criteria for participating houses.

The March 2027 season
The FHCM has set Monday 1 to Tuesday 9 March 2027 for the Womenswear Fall/Winter 2027-2028 calendar. It follows Paris Fashion Week Menswear (19–24 January 2027) and Haute Couture Week (25–28 January 2027), and closes the four-city womenswear season after New York and Milan. London’s February 2027 dates had not been published by the British Fashion Council when this page was checked on 1 October 2026.
The FHCM publishes the official calendar of houses ahead of the season; this index does not list houses before they appear on it.
