Lagos Fashion Week is the most influential fashion event in West Africa and one of the most important on the emerging global circuit. It is a launchpad for African designers, a champion of sustainability, and a source of the new faces The Cast Index tracks on its Rising board.

The desk verdict

Lagos Fashion Week, founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele and produced by Style House Files, is West Africa’s flagship week and a launchpad for African designers and faces. Use it as a real circuit, not a footnote. Skip it only if you refuse to track any week outside the Big Four — that refusal is the mistake.

Skip this if you want a Big-Four seating chart. Lagos is an emerging-circuit flagship with its own infrastructure (including the Fashion Focus Fund since 2011).

What is Lagos Fashion Week?

Nigeria’s flagship fashion week and a pan-African platform, founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele and produced by her agency Style House Files. The first edition featured more than 40 designers; the week now showcases over 60 designers to a global audience of more than 40,000 retailers, media and consumers, and is widely described as Africa’s largest clothing trade show.

From the first edition it has run the Fashion Focus Fund, a competition and development programme for emerging designers. The week is built as industry infrastructure — mentorship, funding, production support — not only as a runway spectacle.

What is Lagos Fashion Week known for?

New design talent, textile and craft innovation, and a serious sustainability thread (including the Woven Threads circular-economy initiative during 2020). Designers including Orange Culture, Lisa Folawiyo and Christie Brown built early visibility here. Faces that break out in Lagos increasingly go on to walk the Big Four — which is why Rising exists.

Runway footage from the week was included in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s 2022 “Africa Fashion” exhibition. That is institutional recognition, not a substitute for the trade show itself.

Who should skip a Big-Four-only map?

Anyone who thinks influence only counts after Paris. Geography never subtracts points on the Cast Index; a Global 50 rank still needs verified major-brand or cross-market evidence. Lagos can be the first signal. Treating it as unofficial is how desks miss the next cast.

If you are a new model, the same no-pay rule applies as everywhere else. A reputable agency in this market is still an agency; a paid “Lagos package” is still a warning.
