The person and the label
Who is behind Francisco Cancino?
Born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Francisco Cancino created Yakampot, a Mexico City label named after a community in San Juan Chamula; in 2013 Time Out described its work with the textile and dyeing traditions of the Tzeltal and Tzotzil peoples. For Yakampot’s ninth collection, in 2016, artisans from Chiapas made the fabrics by hand, including on the backstrap loom, Univision reported. He now shows under his own name: Plateros, his eleventh collection, was shown on the first day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week México in October 2024.
