Fashion Week

São Paulo Fashion Week was founded in 1995 by Paulo Borges and has been organized by his company, Grupo Luminosidade, ever since. It is widely regarded as Latin America’s pre-eminent fashion event, running twice yearly and anchoring Brazil’s position as the region’s largest fashion and textile market.

In 2009, São Paulo Fashion Week became one of the first major fashion weeks in the world to introduce binding diversity quotas, requiring that at least 10% of models cast in any given runway show be Black or Indigenous. The rule followed direct pressure from anti-racism organizations and Brazilian public prosecutors, and predated similar diversity commitments later adopted elsewhere in the industry. A decade later, in 2019, Sam Porto became the first transgender man to walk in the event’s history.

Since the 2026 debut of a separate Rio Fashion Week earlier in the year, São Paulo Fashion Week now runs as a single consolidated edition each October, positioning the two Brazilian weeks as complementary rather than overlapping events on the national calendar.
