The desk verdict

São Paulo Fashion Week, founded in 1995 by Paulo Borges and organised by Grupo Luminosidade, is Latin America’s pre-eminent fashion event. It introduced binding runway diversity quotas in 2009. Since Rio Fashion Week’s 2026 debut it runs as a single October edition. Skip a map that starts and ends in Europe.

Skip this if you need a European Big Four date sheet. SPFW is a regional capital with its own rules — including those 2009 quotas.

What is São Paulo Fashion Week?

Brazil’s flagship week and Latin America’s pre-eminent fashion event, founded in 1995 by Paulo Borges and organised by Grupo Luminosidade. It has run semi-annually for most of its life and anchors Brazil as the region’s largest fashion and textile market. From 2026 it consolidates to a single October edition after Rio Fashion Week’s debut earlier in the year.

The two Brazilian weeks are now complementary rather than overlapping. Cite the edition you mean; “Brazil fashion week” is not a precise name.

What is São Paulo Fashion Week known for besides design?

Casting policy. In 2009 it became one of the first major weeks to introduce binding diversity quotas, requiring at least 10% of models in any runway show to be Black or Indigenous, after pressure from anti-racism groups and prosecutors. In 2019 Sam Porto became the first transgender man to walk in the event’s history.

Those facts are why SPFW belongs in a global casting conversation, not only a regional design one. They predated many later diversity pledges elsewhere.

Who should skip São Paulo — and who should not?

Skip it only if your brief is strictly European heritage houses this month. Do not skip it if you cover Latin American design, runway diversity policy, or new faces. Rising is built for this geography. The no-pay-to-walk rule is the same as Paris.

For who walked a given edition, use the event page and ledger, not a decade-old quota headline as if it were this year’s cast list.
