What fur-free NYFW changes in September 2026

The Council of Fashion Designers of America says farmed or trapped fur from animals killed specifically for their pelts will not be permitted in collections on the official New York Fashion Week schedule beginning in September 2026. Its examples include mink, fox, rabbit, karakul lamb, chinchilla, coyote and raccoon dog.

The policy also changes what the CFDA will promote through the Fashion Calendar, social channels and website. It does not describe every animal-derived material as fur, and it includes an exemption for material obtained by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence hunting.

Runway images strip away material context. Faux fur, recycled material, shearling and next-generation textiles can be visually difficult to distinguish in a photograph. Brands and publications will need accurate captions and material descriptions if audiences are to understand what they are seeing.

The change also affects styling, fittings and backstage handling. Teams need enough lead time to identify materials and avoid ambiguous claims, especially when archive pieces or mixed-material accessories enter a look.

The CFDA’s preliminary schedule runs from Thursday 10 September to Tuesday 15 September 2026. It opens with Henry Zankov’s debut as artistic director of Diane von Furstenberg and closes with Thom Browne, according to the organiser’s June schedule announcement.
