The best skin tints to buy in the UK.

Four sheer bases compared by coverage, finish, UK SPF labelling, shade range and price — and why the same tint can carry a different SPF in the UK and the US.

Quick answer

What is the best skin tint to buy in the UK?

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint is the best overall and our mature-skin pick: a hydrating serum tint, labelled SPF 30 in the UK, in 30 shades at £42. For oily skin, choose Laura Mercier’s Blurred Matte Oil Free tint; on a budget, e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint at £14; for dry skin, Saie Slip Tint.

Selection is editorial and never paid for. Prices are UK guide prices from official pages or named retailers when checked, and may have changed. How we chose.

The picks in detail

Why each one earns its place.

Strengths and limitations are drawn from specifications — texture, finish, shade range, filters, fragrance, price and availability — not from wear testing.

Best overall and for mature skin

Super Serum Skin Tint

ILIA

ILIA’s serum tint combines sheer, even coverage and a dewy finish with squalane, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and Space NK’s listing describes it softening the look of fine lines. Its 30 shades are the widest range among these tints, and the UK formula is labelled SPF 30 with zinc oxide.

Best for oily skin

Tinted Moisturizer Blurred Matte Oil Free SPF 30

Laura Mercier

Laura Mercier’s oil-free tint is designed for shine control, with sheer-to-light coverage, a blurred matte finish and a non-comedogenic label. The brand reports 24-hour shine control from its own 30-person clinical study and says rock samphire helps reduce sebum over time.

Halo Glow Skin Tint SPF 50

e.l.f. Cosmetics

Best for dry skin

Slip Tint

Saie

Saie’s Slip Tint is a sheer, dewy tinted moisturiser with sodium hyaluronate and plant oils, which suits skin that wants moisture as much as colour. It uses 15% zinc oxide; the US page labels it SPF 35, while the UK retailer listing gives no SPF number.

What to look for

Read the label before the award.

Skin tint or foundation?

Skin tints and tinted moisturisers give sheer to light coverage that lets skin show through; foundations go further. If you need to cover pigmentation or redness fully, use a tint with a concealer, or choose a foundation.

SPF in a tint is a bonus, not your sunscreen

The British Association of Dermatologists says SPF in moisturisers gives much lower protection than the label suggests, because people apply it thinly. Wear a dedicated sunscreen under a tint, even one labelled SPF 50.

UK and US formulas differ

ILIA’s tint is labelled SPF 30 in the UK and SPF 40 in the US, and Saie’s UK listing carries no SPF number. Check the label on the version you buy.

For oily skin

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests oil-free, non-comedogenic products for oily skin. A matte or blurred finish keeps shine down for longer than a dewy tint.

For dry or mature skin

Hydrating bases with humectants such as hyaluronic acid and a dewy finish sit more comfortably on dry skin than matte formulas. Apply thinly and build only where needed.

How we chose

Desk research, stated plainly.

This guide is desk research. We compared skin tints and tinted moisturisers sold in the UK using the brands’ published formulas, ingredient lists, specifications and directions, together with UK prices from official pages or named retailers on 1 October 2026. None of the products was tested in a laboratory or worn by our editors for this guide.

We compared coverage, finish, shade range, SPF labelling on the UK listing, skin-type claims, fragrance and UK price. Where a brand sells a different formula or SPF label in the US, we recorded the UK version.

Awards describe fit — the job a product is best suited to — rather than a single overall score. Brand claims are reported as brand claims. No brand paid for inclusion, and shopping links elsewhere on the site do not influence which products appear here.

Questions

Best skin tints (UK), answered

What is the difference between a skin tint and foundation?

Coverage. Skin tints and tinted moisturisers give sheer to light coverage and usually a dewy or natural finish; foundation gives medium to full coverage. Several tints also carry an SPF label.

What is the best skin tint for oily skin?

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Blurred Matte Oil Free SPF 30: an oil-free, non-comedogenic tint with a blurred matte finish in 20 shades, at £39. Its shine-control figures are brand claims.

What is the best skin tint for mature skin?

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint, a hydrating serum tint with squalane, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid that Space NK describes as softening the look of fine lines. It comes in 30 shades, labelled SPF 30 in the UK.

Is the SPF in a skin tint enough?

No. The British Association of Dermatologists warns that products such as SPF moisturisers are applied too thinly to give their labelled protection. Use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or above with four- or five-star UVA protection underneath.

Is ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30 or SPF 40?

Both, depending on the market. The UK version sold by Space NK is labelled SPF 30; ILIA’s US page labels its formula SPF 40. Follow the label on the bottle you buy.

Which skin tint has the highest SPF?

Among these picks, e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint is labelled mineral SPF 50. As with any tint, it should go over a dedicated sunscreen rather than replace it.
