Tokyo Fashion Week is the week European coverage still treats as optional and Japanese street style treats as oxygen. It is a trade show twice a year. It is not automatically the fifth Big Four city — and the desk will not pretend the dispute does not exist.

The desk verdict
Tokyo Fashion Week (東京コレクション) is a biannual trade week, titled Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo since 2019, long staged at Shibuya Hikarie. It is widely described as Asia’s largest fashion week and is known for avant-garde, experimental design and streetwear. Some round-ups call it a “Big Five” city; that characterisation is disputed. Skip this if you need couture credits.
Skip this if you need haute couture or a legally protected Fédération calendar. Tokyo is ready-to-wear, streetwear and experimental design.
When is Tokyo Fashion Week?
Twice a year, for spring and autumn collections. The Cast Index AW26 record is 16–21 March 2026 at Shibuya Hikarie. The 2020 edition was cancelled because of Covid-19. Always re-check the live event page; title sponsorship and venue have changed before.
The week is not a fifth stop on the September Big Four relay. It runs on Tokyo’s own calendar. Cite the edition, not “Tokyo Fashion Week” as if it were one immortal date sheet.
Who runs Tokyo Fashion Week now?
Rakuten has been title sponsor since 2019, branding the event Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo. Earlier title sponsors included Amazon Fashion and Mercedes-Benz. The platform itself is older than the current sponsor — a 2005 organisation date is the standing industry description for the modern week.
Sponsor changes matter for how the week is named in citations. “Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO” is a historical name, not the current one. Shiseido has been an official cosmetics sponsor in past Amazon-titled editions — that is a commercial credit, not a Cast Index finish assignment.
Is Tokyo one of the Big Five fashion weeks?
Some lists include Tokyo with New York, London, Milan and Paris. Others note that its international wholesale and press influence still lags the traditional Big Four. The Cast Index tracks it as Asia’s largest week and as a world desk — not as a sixth Big Four city, and not as a footnote.
What is not in dispute: Tokyo is a leading showcase for avant-garde and experimental fashion and for Tokyo streetwear. That is a different job from Milan’s heritage houses or Paris couture.
J-beauty in the archive (Shiseido Synchro Skin) is an origin-market complexion reference. It is not a Tokyo Fashion Week makeup credit unless a show actually names it. Open the Tokyo world desk for faces, the week and the kit together.
| Use Tokyo for | Do not use Tokyo for |
|---|---|
| Avant-garde, experimental, streetwear | Haute couture credits |
| Asia’s largest week by scale | An undisputed Big Five seat |
| Rakuten-titled calendar since 2019 | Last decade’s Amazon or Mercedes name |
Who should skip Tokyo Fashion Week coverage?
Skip it if you need couture, if you need a consumer festival with public tickets for every show, or if you are quoting a “Big Five” line as settled law. Do not skip it if you cover Japanese design, streetwear, or J-beauty as an origin market.
Official seats are allocated. Unverified “Tokyo Fashion Week tickets” follow the same scam pattern as New York or Paris.
