A week built for modest fashion

Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week began in November 2021 with a single evening at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Stadium, where the Ministry of Trade and KADIN showed twelve Muslim fashion labels, twelve mainstream brands and fifteen student designers. Five years on, it fills a convention centre.

This year the Ministry of Trade and Bank Indonesia brought JMFW together with IN2MOTIONFEST, the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival, now in its fifth year. Organisers said that running the two separately had divided the attention of designers, sponsors and foreign buyers; under one roof, the goal is to make Indonesia a global modest fashion sourcing hub.

Why Indonesia leads the world

The confidence is backed by numbers. The State of the Global Islamic Economy 2025/26 report ranks Indonesia first in the world for modest fashion, and the Ministry of Trade reports modest fashion exports of USD 5.97 billion from January to August 2026, up 2.89% on the same period last year, after USD 8.67 billion in 2025.

The same report puts global Muslim spending on clothing and footwear at USD 347 billion in 2024, rising to USD 444 billion by 2029 — a market Indonesian designers are increasingly well placed to serve.

Wastra, from West Sumatra to the world

Indonesia’s textile heritage sets the tone. The opening on 14 October featured a performance in richly patterned wastra, and the Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, spoke of batik, tenun and the country’s many traditional textiles as the source of Indonesian modest fashion’s identity.

For designers, the week is a launchpad. Fomalhaut Zamel, a label from West Sumatra built on local tenun, told the Ministry of Trade that its customers now come from well beyond the province, and that taking part in IN2MOTIONFEST and JMFW helped it move from private orders into ready-to-wear.

How to visit

The festival is open to the public by registration, and the five days combine runway shows with a trade floor for shoppers and buyers.

Beauty notes

Wardah, one of Indonesia’s best-known halal beauty brands, returns as the official beauty partner. The timing is fitting: halal certification becomes mandatory for cosmetics sold in Indonesia from 17–18 October 2026, as the week draws to a close.

What comes next in Jakarta

The city’s fashion calendar stays busy. Jakarta Fashion Week 2027 follows from 26 October to 1 November 2026 at City Hall, Pondok Indah Mall 3, so visitors can see two of Indonesia’s flagship weeks within a fortnight.
