Early life
Amber Evangeline Valletta was born on 9 February 1974 in Tucson, Arizona, and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by her mother, Theresa Malaby, who worked at the post office; Valletta is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, with additional Portuguese, English and Italian heritage. Her mother enrolled her at 15 in modelling school at the Linda Layman Agency in Tulsa.

A 1990s supermodel career
Valletta’s first American Vogue cover came in February 1993, beginning a run that would total more than a dozen covers for the title, alongside campaigns for Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Prada, Valentino, Gucci and Versace, and cosmetics contracts with Calvin Klein and Elizabeth Arden. She co-hosted MTV’s House of Style with Shalom Harlow from 1995 to 1996, and was photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia in January 1996 and American Vogue that July. In Spring/Summer 2000 she modelled Versace’s green "jungle dress," later famously worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy Awards, an event widely credited with driving the search demand that led to the creation of Google Images.

A parallel acting career, 2000–2015
Valletta made her acting debut in Drop Back Ten in 2000, taking film roles in Hitch and Transporter 2 in 2005, followed by Gamer in 2009 and The Spy Next Door in 2010. She held a recurring role on the television series Revenge from 2011 to 2014, followed by series-regular roles in Legends (2014) and Blood & Oil (2015).

Sustainability advocacy, 2020–2025
In 2020, Valletta was named British Vogue’s first Contributing Sustainability Editor and Sustainability Ambassador for the Fashion Institute of Technology, and hosted the UN’s annual World Oceans Day conference in 2022. On 23 September 2025 she was named a UN Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador, announced on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session, focused on climate, biodiversity and pollution. She is represented by The Society Management in New York.
