Early life
Carolyn Murphy was born on 11 August 1973 in Panama City, Florida, and grew up between the Gulf Coast and a family farm in Virginia. She was discovered at 15 at a modelling convention, initially balancing college with part-time modelling before committing fully to the industry.

Early career and a Model of the Year award, 1995–1998
Murphy signed her first major international contract with Prada in 1995, building a campaign record that would go on to include DKNY, Tom Ford, Céline, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, Missoni, Versace, Tiffany & Co. and Calvin Klein’s Contradiction fragrance. She took a supporting film role as "Dubbie" in Barry Levinson’s Liberty Heights in 1998, the same year she won Model of the Year at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards.

Estée Lauder and continued industry recognition, 1999–2012
Murphy was featured as one of the "Modern Muses" in American Vogue’s November 1999 millennium issue, and became a long-term Estée Lauder ambassador in 2001. She has appeared on dozens of Vogue covers across the US, French and Italian editions over her career, alongside Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue appearances in 2005 and 2006. In 2012 she ranked ninth on Forbes’ highest-paid models list and fifth on Models.com’s "20 Supermodel Icons," the same year she began hosting Project Runway All Stars.
