Early life
Helena Christensen was born on 25 December 1968 in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a Danish father and Peruvian mother. She won Miss Universe Denmark in 1986, competing at Miss Universe in Panama that year, and was a finalist in the "Look of the Year" competition in 1987 before relocating to Paris in the late 1980s to model.

A defining 1990s career
Christensen appeared in Chris Isaak’s "Wicked Game" video in 1990, an appearance later ranked among MTV’s sexiest videos of all time and her most iconic early credit. Through the 1990s she was a regular presence on Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and W covers, fronting campaigns for Revlon, Chanel, Versace, Lanvin, Prada, Hermès and Valentino, and was an original Victoria’s Secret Angel alongside Tyra Banks, Karen Mulder, Daniela Peštová and Stephanie Seymour. In 1996 The New York Times named her part of "The Magnificent Seven" supermodels.

Photography and advocacy, 1999–2009
Christensen co-founded Nylon magazine as creative director in 1999, and pursued photography exhibitions through the mid-2000s, including "A Quiet Story" at Rotterdam’s Locus Gallery in 2006 and "Far From, Close" at New York’s Dactyl Foundation in 2008–09, benefiting the International Center of Photography and the Chernobyl Children’s Project. She launched a Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign in 2006, has been a longtime face and collaborator with Triumph lingerie since 2008, and partnered with Oxfam in 2009 to document climate-change impact in Peru.

Christensen closed Versace’s Spring/Summer 2018 show alongside Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Carla Bruni, having been named "Global Explorer" for Luxury Collection Hotels and Resorts in 2016. In 2025 she fronted Rouje’s Summer campaign, a Rolla’s Jeans collaboration launched in February, and covers for Harper’s Bazaar Arabia and Vogue Scandinavia, and walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York on 15 October 2025. She is represented by ZZO in Paris and D’Management in Milan.
