02 / History

A council for British fashion

The British Fashion Council was founded in 1983 to promote the British fashion industry at home and abroad, and it staged the first London Fashion Week the following year. The event gave the city’s designers — then scattered across independent showrooms — a single organised platform, and it grew through the 1990s and 2000s into one of the four anchors of the international womenswear calendar.

Alongside the twice-yearly fashion week, the BFC runs designer-support schemes including NEWGEN and the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, and organises The Fashion Awards, its annual fundraiser, held on 30 November in 2026. London Fashion Week today combines runway shows and presentations with a public-facing city celebration programme.

The season marked MCQUEEN’s return to the LFW schedule for the first time since 2001, under Seán McGirr; Christopher Kane’s first collection for Mulberry; and the LFW debut of Marks & Spencer.
