Early life
Raquel Cristina Zimmermann was born on 6 July 1983 in Bom Retiro do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, descended from Bavarian-German immigrants who settled in the region in the 1800s. She began modelling in Brazil around 15 or 16 before her international breakthrough.

Early Vogue covers and a record ranking, 2000–2010
Zimmermann fronted her first Vogue Italia cover in September 2000, followed by a Vogue Paris cover the same year, and campaigns for Dior and Hermès in the early 2000s. In May 2007 she was featured in American Vogue’s "World’s Next Top Models," and appeared in a Gucci fragrance commercial directed by David Lynch, alongside runway and campaign work for Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Versace. From December 2007 to February 2010 she ranked No. 1 on Models.com’s Top 50 industry ranking, and in 2009 was named one of Vogue Paris’s "top 30 models of the decade."

Zimmermann appeared in Lady Gaga’s "Born This Way" video in 2011, was photographed for the 2015 Pirelli Calendar by Steven Meisel, and fronted a Versace Spring/Summer campaign in 2016, becoming a Revlon ambassador in 2018.

In August 2024, Zimmermann returned to the cover of Vogue Brasil after a 13-year gap — her seventh cover for the title and 39th Vogue cover overall — shot by Chris Colls and styled in Nicolas Ghesquière’s Fall 2024 Louis Vuitton, with the cover line "Life really begins at 40." She is represented by DNA Model Management in New York and VIVA Model Management in Paris and London.
