Early life
Stella Maynes Maxwell was born on 15 May 1990 in Brussels, Belgium, to Northern Irish parents; her father, Maurice Maxwell, was a retired diplomat who headed the European Commission office in Belfast. She was raised in Brussels until 13, then Canberra, Australia, and finally Wellington, New Zealand from 14, attending Queen Margaret College and the University of Otago in Dunedin, where she was scouted while working at a newsstand as a student.

Victoria’s Secret years, 2014–2018
Maxwell began modelling professionally after finishing university, and walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for the first time in London in 2014, becoming a full Victoria’s Secret Angel in April 2015. She walked the show again in Paris in 2016, the same year she was ranked No. 1 on Maxim’s "Hot 100 List." Her runway and campaign work through this period included Alexander McQueen, Asos, H&M, Jeremy Scott, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel, Versace and Fendi, alongside campaigns for Karl Lagerfeld.

Maxwell rejoined the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show cast in 2025, her first appearance on the runway since 2018, in a show that streamed on Prime Video on 15 October 2025. She is represented by The Society Management, Elite Model Management and the Kate Moss Agency.
