Early life
Lara Catherina Stone was born on 20 December 1983 in Geldrop, Netherlands, to English father Michael Stone and Dutch mother Kathryna. She was scouted at 12 in the Paris Métro, and competed in the Elite Model Look competition at 15 in 1999, signing with Elite Model Management.

Signing with IMG and an exclusive Calvin Klein contract, 2006–2010
Stone signed with IMG Models in 2006, making her catwalk debut in Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy couture show in Paris and securing an exclusive Calvin Klein contract. A Vogue Paris cover followed in April 2007, the year a New York Times critic dubbed her "the anti-model" for her fuller figure relative to prevailing model norms. In 2008 she signed a semi-exclusive contract with Prada, and in 2009 fronted covers for W and, that May, her American Vogue debut. In 2010 she became the face of Prada’s Infusion d’Iris fragrance, signed a multi-brand exclusive deal with Calvin Klein Inc., appeared in the Pirelli Calendar, and won Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

Stone ranked No. 1 on Models.com’s "Top 50 Models" list from Spring 2010 through Summer 2012, and ranked 7th on Forbes’ World’s Top-Earning Models in 2011 at $4.5 million. She returned to the Pirelli Calendar in 2012 and became the face of Calvin Klein Underwear, adding covers for Vogue Paris and Harper’s Bazaar in 2014, and a cameo in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie in 2016.
