01 / Why they matter
What Cara is known for.
A defining runway face of the early 2010s.
02 / Career record
Early life
Cara Jocelyn Delevingne was born on 12 August 1992 in Hammersmith, London, to property developer Charles Hamar Delevingne and Pandora Stevens Delevingne. She has two older sisters, Chloe and Poppy Delevingne — Poppy also a model — and a paternal half-brother, Alexander Jaffe. Her first modelling assignment came at age 10, an editorial for Vogue Italia, though she then worked largely unpaid for about a year and endured two seasons of casting rejections.
She signed with Storm Management in 2009 after leaving Bedales School, and was discovered by Burberry designer Christopher Bailey, who gave her a runway debut in the house’s Autumn/Winter 2011 show at London Fashion Week.
03 / Career record
Rapid rise, 2011–2013
Following her Burberry debut, Delevingne walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and fronted campaigns for Chanel, Dior, Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Burberry, Tag Heuer, Pepe Jeans, Alexander Wang and Yves Saint Laurent in 2012, the same year she won Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. In 2013 she walked Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show at Linlithgow Palace in Scotland and the house’s Cruise show in Singapore, collaborated with stylist Katie Grand and with Tod’s, and was named the year’s most-Googled fashion figure and most-reblogged model on Tumblr.
04 / Career record
Peak earnings and a pivot to acting, 2014–2015
Delevingne won a second Model of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards in 2014, the same year Forbes ranked her 6th on its World’s Highest-Paid Models list at an estimated $3.5 million. In 2015 that figure rose to an estimated $9 million, placing her 2nd on Forbes’ list, even as she began reducing her runway commitments to focus increasingly on acting — a shift that would come to define the second half of her career, including roles in Suicide Squad and Carnival Row.
05 / Career record
Continuing legacy
Across her modelling career, Delevingne appeared on covers including Vogue, V Magazine, British GQ, Vogue Paris, Elle UK, Elle Australia, The Wall Street Journal Magazine and Love Magazine, and remains one of the most recognised faces to emerge from the early-2010s British modelling generation.
