How to become a model in Germany

Apply through a Hamburg, Berlin or Munich agency’s own website, with natural photos and your height. Several publish minimum heights and ages, and Louisa holds a weekly open call. Where an agent places a model in employment, German law caps its fee and bans advance payments; children need official approval for photo shoots.

How it works

How do agencies in Germany recruit?

  • Applications go through agencies’ own forms or email. Iconic and Seeds say they hold no open calls or walk-ins; Louisa holds an open call every Wednesday in Munich and Hamburg. Louisa Models — become a model ↗
  • Professional photos are not needed: Modelwerk, Louisa, Munich Models and OKAY all say snapshots are enough. Modelwerk — apply ↗
  • Published requirements vary: Modelwerk and M4 accept women from 14 and men from 16, OKAY from 17, and several agencies set minimum heights. M4 Models — application ↗
  • Agencies reply only if interested: Seeds notifies successful applicants only, and Louisa contacts you only if it wants to represent you. SEEDS — apply ↗
  • The Federal Employment Agency’s artist placement service (ZAV) also places fashion and advertising models, and says it charges no placement commission. ZAV-Künstlervermittlung — Werbung / Models ↗

Fees, contracts and safeguarding

What are the rules in Germany?

  • Employing children — under 15, or still in full-time compulsory schooling — is prohibited, except where the supervisory authority grants an exception for events. Jugendarbeitsschutzgesetz § 5 ↗
  • On application, the authority may allow children to take part in advertising events and film and photo shoots for limited hours (up to two hours a day for ages 3–6, three hours for older children), with written parental consent and a medical certificate no more than three months old. Jugendarbeitsschutzgesetz § 6 ↗
  • A private placement agent may charge a jobseeker only if a job actually results, must agree the fee in writing, and may not demand or accept advance payments. SGB III § 296 ↗
  • For placing photo models, advertising models and mannequins in employment, the agent’s fee is capped at 14 per cent of the model’s pay including VAT, or 18 per cent for jobs of up to seven days. Vermittler-Vergütungsverordnung § 2 ↗

FAQ

Modelling in Germany, answered

Can a German model agency charge me a fee?

Is there a minimum height?

Many German agencies publish one: Munich Models asks for 175cm, M4 1.74m (women) and 1.84m (men), and Model Management 1.73m and 1.83m. Iconic and Seeds publish none and ask for your height on the form.

Can children model in Germany?

Only with approval from the supervisory authority, which can allow children to take part in advertising and photo shoots for limited hours, with written parental consent and a medical certificate no more than three months old.
